KUCHING: Over 1,200 jobseekers thronged the Sarawak Career and Internship Fair hosted by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus to learn more about job opportunities in various industries.

The one-day fair held this week featured leading employers in the country from industries such as engineering, ICT, banking and finance, telecommunications, construction, education and automotive.

Participating companies included Sarawak Energy Bhd, Ernst & Young, Speedwing, Longi (Kuching) Sdn Bhd, Keyence Malaysia, Press Metal, CPA Australia, Intern2u, Tokio Marine, Out of Box, Nielsen, Hilti Asia IT Services, OBYU, Great Eastern, Career Star International and others.

The fair, which was supported by various institutions of higher education in Sarawak, gave visitors the chance to speak to prospective employers and find out what they were looking for in hiring candidates.

Sarawak Energy Bhd human resources executive Danielle Clark said the fair allowed the company to recruit not only students from Swinburne Sarawak but also local talents in electrical, electronics and mechanical engineering.

“By taking part in this event, we had the opportunity to highlight our company’s corporate branding as we are commonly known as Sesco and many are unaware of the other things our company is involved in,” she said.

Ernst & Young senior tax manager Anne Chong said the company was looking to recruit technically- competent candidates with the relevant skills and excellent academic results, proficient in English and able to interact with confidence.

“Ernst & Young offers a fulfilling career. We provide in-house training to enhance employees’ skills and enable them to move forward in their career,” she said.

Swinburne Sarawak has a graduate employability rate of over 93%, with 100% employment reported for several of its business and engineering programmes.

Students are prepared for a career through the integration of industry needs in the teaching and learning process such as capstone projects in the final year, internship opportunities with leading companies, career talks and guidance as well as a global alumni network to leverage on.
